What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorders, where in set of neurological symptoms are noted due to advanced aging or in some cases, well ahead of time due to significant genetic mutations.  

In general, Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder characterised by slowness in activities of daily living.  

Is Parkinson's Disease Curable?

NO.  However, among various neurological disorders, Parkinson's disease is one disorder, which has very good symptomatic therapies, both medical and surgical which gives them good clinical benefit and overall improvement in quality of life.

Does Stem Cell therapy cure Parkinson's Disease?

Currently NO.  Till now, there are no therapies which either stop the progression of the disease or reverse the loss of neurons occurring in the brain.

Is DBS effective for Parkinson's Disease?

DBS or Deep Brain stimulation is a very effective therapy for Parkinson's disease.  It is in usage for more than 25 years now and sufficient medical literature supporting its long term benefit.

Is DBS the last option for Parkinson's Disease?

DBS is a quality of life related surgery.  It basically helps to over come the motor complications related to levodopa therapy.  The DBS has a specific window period during which its benefits are very effective.  Most of the people start having that window period after about 5-6 yrs of onset of Parkinson's disease.  It is definitely not the advised in advanced stage of Parkinson's disease and not all patients are candidates for DBS.  Your treating doctor would be able to tell, whether you are a right candidate for the surgery.

Is there a role of exercies in Parkinson's Disease?

Definitely Yes.  Parkinson's Disease is a progressive disorder and hence it has been shown across various medical literature that exercises in any form (Aerobic, yoga, tai-chi, ...) has shown to have a clear benefit in improving the quality of life .
